EXPLORING THE TRANSFORMATIVE ROLE OF GENERATIVE AI IN CYBERSECURITY: OPPORTUNITIES FOR INNOVATION, CHALLENGES OF AI-DRIVEN THREATS, AND STRATEGIC COUNTERMEASURES

The rapid advancement of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) has fundamentally transformed the cybersecurity landscape by introducing innovative security capabilities while simultaneously enabling increasingly sophisticated cyber threats. Organizations face the challenge of harnessing the benefits of GenAI without exposing themselves to AI-driven attacks such as automated phishing, deepfake-enabled social engineering, malware generation, and adversarial manipulation. This study explores the transformative role of generative AI in cybersecurity by examining its opportunities for innovation, the emerging threats associated with malicious AI applications, and the strategic countermeasures required to mitigate these risks. A qualitative systematic literature review was conducted using peer-reviewed journal articles, conference proceedings, industry reports, and cybersecurity frameworks published between 2020 and 2026. The collected evidence was critically analyzed to identify prevailing trends, technological developments, security challenges, and best practices. The findings indicate that generative AI significantly enhances threat intelligence, automated incident response, vulnerability assessment, malware detection, and security operations through predictive analytics and intelligent automation. However, the same technologies have also accelerated the evolution of AI-powered cyberattacks, increasing the complexity, scale, and adaptability of modern threats. The study concludes that effective cybersecurity in the era of generative AI requires a comprehensive strategy combining AI governance, robust regulatory frameworks, continuous human oversight, zero-trust security architectures, adversarial AI defenses, and ongoing workforce training. These findings provide valuable insights for policymakers, cybersecurity professionals, researchers, and organizations seeking to maximize the benefits of generative AI while strengthening resilience against emerging AI-enabled cyber threats
